After two years of great advances on the subject, this year's category-wide denial is being viewed as a setback...

Digital Desk:  The Academy Awards have no female directors nominated for the first time in three years.

Martin McDonagh ("The Banshees of Inisherin"), Steven Spielberg ("The Fablemans"), The Daniels ("Everything Everywhere All At Once"), Todd Field ("Tár"), and Ruben Stlund ("Triangle of Sadness") were among the five filmmakers nominated for Oscars.

Most Oscar prediction sites predicted that Sarah Polley ("Women Talking") and Gina Prince-Bythewood ("The Woman King") would be nominated.

After two years of tremendous progress on the subject, this year's category-wide exclusion is being viewed as a setback. Chloé Zhao became only the second woman director and the first woman of colour to win Best Director at the Oscars in 2021 for her 2020 film "Nomadland." Her award was followed the next year by one for Jane Campion's 2021 film "The Power of the Dog."

Kathryn Bigelow is the only other female director to have won an Academy Award for Best Director for her work on "The Hurt Locker" in 2010.

"Once again, Academy voters have proven that they do not value women's voices by excluding us from Best Director nominees."
"An Academy Award is more than a gold statue, it's a career accelerator that can lead to continuous work and increased salary. That is why WIF will continue to campaign for the inclusion of films directed by outstanding women, such as Sarah Polley's "Women Talking," Gina Prince-"The Bythewood's Woman King," Maria Schrader's "She Said," Chinonye Chukwu's "Till," and Charlotte Wells' "Aftersun" Women in Film tweeted in a statement.
