  • A sudden flash flood on August 7 inundated vast areas of Kohora and greater Kaziranga, with experts pointing to unchecked earth cutting and deforestation in the Karbi Anglong hills as a primary contributing factor

A severe flash flood on August 7 caused widespread panic and significant disruption across Kohora and the broader Kaziranga region. Floodwaters, originating from the adjoining hills of Karbi Anglong, rapidly submerged numerous residential properties and school buildings, following a spell of heavy rainfall that began on Tuesday night.

While heavy downpours contributed to the deluge, local reports and observations suggest the severity of the inundation was greatly exacerbated by extensive environmental degradation in the nearby hill areas. Sources indicate that rampant earth cutting and persistent deforestation in the Karbi Anglong hills have drastically diminished the soil's natural water retention and absorption capabilities. This reduced capacity means a much larger volume of water now flows unimpeded from the hills, overwhelming the plains below.

Further compounding the issue, poorly planned drainage infrastructure and various human activities, including the construction of boundary walls that obstruct natural water channels, are believed to have intensified the situation. These factors collectively contributed to the rapid rise of water levels, leading to the inundation of residential premises and public spaces.

Concerns are mounting among residents and environmentalists alike. If the current trend of environmental neglect and unregulated anthropogenic activities continues without decisive intervention from both the State Forest department and the civil administration, the possibility of more frequent and severe natural calamities in Kaziranga and its surrounding areas appears increasingly likely.
