In a significant move beyond immediate flood relief, a grassroots movement led by former United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) cadres is actively working to restore the livelihoods of flood-affected farmers across Upper Assam. This initiative focuses on the crucial task of producing and distributing paddy seedlings to agricultural communities in districts such as Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat, and parts of Golaghat, where recent inundations ravaged standing crops and seedbeds.
While traditional relief operations like providing food, shelter, and medical supplies have been paramount, this campaign marks a concerted effort towards long-term agricultural recovery. The mobilisation, primarily centered in Dibrugarh and Tinsukia, brings together a wide spectrum of society, including local farmers, tea garden workers, students, women’s groups, youth organisations, and various village communities, all united by a common purpose to support their struggling neighbours.
Monimanik Gogoi, a former rebel who has transitioned into social activism and now presides over the Merbil Tourism Project, underscored the profound impact of this collective spirit. He remarked on witnessing an unprecedented display of human compassion, where people from diverse backgrounds have transcended traditional divisions to demonstrate solidarity. This sentiment encapsulates the extraordinary unity driving the seedling distribution efforts.
The destruction of seedbeds and standing crops by the floods has presented a severe challenge to farmers, making the provision of new seedlings an essential step towards rebuilding. This collaborative project not only addresses an immediate agricultural need but also symbolizes a powerful commitment to community resilience and self-reliance in the wake of natural calamity.
