GUWAHATI: In a testament to community spirit and personal resolve, a group of four women from Assam has taken the initiative to provide crucial support to thousands of families devastated by recent floods in the upper Assam districts of Sivasagar, Charaideo, and Jorhat. Their efforts are aimed at assisting residents in rebuilding their lives in the wake of the disaster.
The humanitarian drive was reportedly spearheaded by Archana Borthakur, 43, who was deeply affected by television reports of the flood situation on the night of July 20. Overwhelmed by the visuals of suffering, she felt an urgent call to action, deciding to travel to the affected areas the very next morning with relief materials, utilizing her personal funds. She believed her physical presence and direct assistance were immediately required by the affected families.
Mobilizing her niece, Luna Handique, 40, and Rumi Devi, 35, from Jorhat, Archana set her plan in motion. On the morning of July 21, she procured relief supplies worth Rs 18,000, which she had on hand, and embarked on the journey, first heading towards Jorhat with Luna. Reports indicate that Luna, initially without experience in such relief work and filled with questions, nevertheless joined her aunt, covering an estimated 300 kilometres to reach the distressed communities.
This dedicated group has since reached 25 flood-hit villages, embodying a spirit of perseverance and direct community engagement. Their initiative highlights the profound impact that individual compassion and collective action can have in times of crisis, offering a ray of hope to those grappling with the aftermath of natural calamities.
