Indore authorities have moved swiftly to seal an illegally operated old-age home and relocate 31 elderly residents to government-recognised facilities, following widespread outrage over a viral video showing an elderly woman being assaulted by a minor. The decisive action, taken on Thursday, uncovered significant operational irregularities at the facility.
The incident came to light after a disturbing video circulated widely on social media on Wednesday, depicting an elderly woman at the Maharana Pratap Welfare Society, located near the Marimata water tank, being beaten with a stick. Indore Collector Shivam Verma promptly ordered an inquiry into the establishment, leading to a joint inspection by officials.
A joint team, comprising personnel from the district administration, the Social Justice Department, and the Women and Child Development Department, visited the premises. Malharganj Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Nidhi Verma confirmed that the investigation revealed the old-age home was functioning without the necessary legal permissions. Officials stated that the facility was operating outside regulatory frameworks.
All 31 residents have since been safely transferred to licensed shelters, ensuring their welfare and protection. The swift administrative response underscores the commitment to safeguarding vulnerable populations and cracking down on unauthorized establishments that fail to meet basic care standards.
