Turkey Earthquake updates: This comes just hours after a 7.8-magnitude earthquake shook Turkey and Syria early, killing over 1300 people...

Digital Desk: A fresh 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck the Elbistan district of Kahramanmaraş province in southern Turkey on Monday. This comes just hours after a 7.8-magnitude earthquake shook Turkey and Syria early, killing over 1300 people.

Hundreds of people were still believed to be trapped beneath the rubble, and the death toll was expected to rise as rescue workers searched huge piles of wrecks in cities and towns across the area.

Residents on both sides of the border rushed outside after being startled out of their sleep by the early morning earthquake on a chilly, rainy, and snowy winter night as buildings were levelled and powerful aftershocks continued.

Rescue workers and residents from multiple cities searched for survivors amid tangles of metal and massive piles of concrete. A hospital in Turkey collapsed, and patients, including newborns, were evacuated from a handful of facilities in Syria.

Turkey is located on major fault lines and is frequently shaken by earthquakes. In 1999, powerful earthquakes struck northwest Turkey, killing 18,000 people. The US Geological Survey recorded a 7.8 magnitude earthquake on Monday. According to Turkish authorities, at least 20 aftershocks took place several hours later during daylight, with the strongest measuring 6.6.
