Digital Desk: After two powerful earthquakes in less than 24 hours, a magnitude 6.0 quake hit central Turkey on Monday, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). Reportedly, two massive earthquakes have destroyed several buildings in southeast Turkey and Syria, with more casualties expected.

According to official numbers, the total number of deaths in Turkey and Syria has risen to 1,300. Turkey's president, Recep Tayyip Erdoan, stated that 912 people were killed and 5,383 were injured. The president added that authorities had no idea how high the death toll would rise as search and rescue operations began. He also stated that 45 countries have already expressed their support.

Buildings in Syria's northern city of Aleppo and the central city of Hama have collapsed, according to state television.

Furthermore, Syria's state news agency reported over 320 deaths and over 1,000 injuries. The White Helmets rescue organization also stated that 147 people were killed and over 340 were injured in Syria in regions where it operates, data that is unlikely to have been included in official state figures. Hundreds are still believed to be buried beneath the rubble.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also reached out amidst the tragedy. "India stands in solidarity with the people of Turkey and is ready to offer all possible assistance to cope with this tragedy," the PM said. The government has decided to dispatch rescue teams, medical personnel, and relief supplies.

Notably, the massive 7.8 earthquakes had its epicenter in Gaziantep, about 90 kilometres from the Syrian border. This region is home to millions of Syrian refugees fleeing the civil war. The quake was felt as far away as Cairo.
