In a recent development, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel designated ghol fish the state fish of Gujarat during a two-day Global Fisheries Conference India 2023 in Ahmedabad. Notably, several dignitaries attended the ceremony.
The ghol fish is one of India's largest fish. The golden-brown fish can be found in the marine areas of Gujarat and Maharashtra.
It is said that, because of its meat and air bladder, the fish is prized and in high demand. The air bladder of the ghol fish is used in pharmacology and is used to make beer and wine.
Ghol fish meat and air bladder are sold separately, with the air bladder exported from Mumbai.
The Ghol fish is around 1.5 metres long. The longer the Ghol fish, the more expensive is its price.
It is to be mentioned that the price of the Ghol fish per unit length might reach Rs 5 lakh. Fishermen who catch Ghol fish might make millions of dollars each year, but it ain't that easy.
During the two-day Global Fisheries Conference India 2023 in Ahmedabad, Central Minister Parsottam Rupala stated that the governments of Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh have already announced their respective state fish through a programme organised by the Fisheries Department.
