We have launched a campaign to forbid bike rickshaws from using motors.

Digital Desk: The Guwahati mayor's decision to ban cycle rickshaws with motors attached was contested by the city's rickshaw pullers. The Mayor of Guwahati said, "The category of slow vehicles includes the cycle rickshaws. However, the addition of motors by the rickshaw drivers makes the cycle rickshaws fall into fast-moving vehicles, increasing the risk of accidents. We have launched a campaign to forbid bike rickshaws from using motors."

It is difficult to paddle cycle rickshaws in Guwahati, especially in the summer, according to rickshaw pullers. "However, employing motors has made pulling rickshaws simpler, a rickshaw puller claimed, adding: "Many of us purchased motors by taking out loans with hefty interest rates. The Mayor's action will cause us to lose a great deal of money. If using motors has increased the number of accidents, allow GMC to grant licences to qualified rickshaw pullers. They ought to be permitted to operate the engines installed in their rickshaws."
