Guwahati has witnessed a disturbing rise in traffic violations, with officials expressing concern over the sharp increase in offences such as drink-and-drive cases, wrong-way driving, speeding, triple riding, and driving without protective gear. According to officials, the number of drink-and-drive cases rose from 41 in April to 396 in May, indicating a worrying trend.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) stated that the primary objective of traffic enforcement is to create awareness and save lives, rather than generating revenue through fines. Despite increasing awareness campaigns, many motorists, including educated individuals, continue to disregard traffic regulations.
Officials have reported 12,000 helmet violations, highlighting the need for stricter enforcement of traffic rules. Authorities are taking strict action against offenders, including the seizure and cancellation of driving licenses. The goal is to encourage safer road behaviour and save lives.
