The Assam government is set to initiate a comprehensive survey of street vendors across Guwahati, commencing August 16. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the initiative on Saturday, detailing plans to cover an estimated one lakh small shops and eateries over a three-month period.
Speaking to media personnel, Sarma emphasized that the exercise aims to gather crucial insights into employment generation and the diverse income streams prevalent within the city's informal economy. He highlighted the significant daily revenues some street vendors and small traders in Guwahati achieve, with some reportedly earning as much as Rs 10,000 per day.
The Chief Minister stated that the survey would provide a clearer understanding of the demographics of those engaged in street vending and small businesses, including their regions of origin. Sarma expressed optimism that the findings would serve as an 'eye-opener' for Assamese youth, illustrating the substantial economic potential within the trade, business, and self-employment sectors. The government anticipates that the data collected will help inform future policies aimed at supporting and integrating this vital segment of the urban economy.
