The spike in alcohol intake that occurred during Holi is a reflection of a larger pattern that has been seen at other festivals over the last year.

Digital Desk: During the recent Holi celebrations, Guwahati witnessed a staggering spike in alcohol sales; sources indicate that in only two days, sales reached a stunning Rs 11 crore and 8 lakh. The city's passion for celebrations is demonstrated by the extraordinary demand for alcohol, which also emphasizes the importance of alcohol in gatherings.

The spike in alcohol intake that occurred during Holi is a reflection of a larger pattern that has been seen at other festivals over the last year. The people of Guwahati have always welcomed traditional and cultural holidays with great enthusiasm, and festivals have always acted as stimulants for higher alcohol consumption.

In the two days of Diwali celebrations last year, alcohol sales in Guwahati reached a total of Rs 6.8 crores, while during the three days of Durga Puja celebrations, the city sold alcohol worth Rs 22 crores.

The implications of increased alcohol consumption have drawn the attention of authorities and public health specialists, especially given its propensity to exacerbate health problems and public disruptions. Even though festivals offer chances for happy get-togethers and cross-cultural interactions, excessive alcohol use can be dangerous for people's health and safety.

Authorities are advised to put policies in place to ensure responsible drinking practices, and efforts to control and monitor the sale and consumption of alcohol remain crucial.

To create an atmosphere where everyone can enjoy the festivities in a responsible and safe manner, it is becoming more and more important to find a balance between celebration and responsible behavior as Guwahati develops as a cultural center.
