Residents across South-East Guwahati are voicing their profound frustration over the prolonged delay in the operationalisation of a crucial water supply scheme, launched in 2013 and costing several hundred crore rupees, which still largely fails to deliver drinking water to households.
Envisioned to address the burgeoning drinking water needs of the city's expanding eastern and southern areas, the South-East Guwahati Water Supply Scheme has seen little progress in terms of actual supply. More than a decade since its inception, key components of the ambitious project are reportedly yet to be commissioned, leaving thousands without the promised reliable water source.
The simmering discontent boiled over on Tuesday when a large group of residents gathered near the Gopal Nagar reservoir in Noonmati. Chanting slogans, they vehemently protested the scheme's non-functional status, demanding its immediate commissioning. Protesters questioned the accountability for such a significant public expenditure remaining idle for over a decade, while they continue to face daily struggles for access to safe drinking water.
The residents' unified demand for immediate water supply and clear accountability for the project's protracted delay underscores the urgent need for authorities to expedite its completion and address the long-standing civic issue impacting a considerable section of Guwahati's population.
