  • A football game turned tragic in Hailakandi district on Thursday evening when two teenagers drowned in a canal while attempting to retrieve their ball

A pall of grief has descended upon Chiporsangan Village Part-I in Assam's Hailakandi district following the tragic drowning of two teenagers on Thursday evening. The incident occurred when the boys, identified as 13-year-old Abhinav Sinha and 15-year-old Arupam Sinha, ventured into a canal to retrieve a football.

Reports from local sources indicate that the youths were playing football with friends in a field near their village, situated approximately 20 kilometres from Hailakandi town. The game took a devastating turn when the ball accidentally rolled into an adjacent canal. In an attempt to recover it, both Abhinav and Arupam entered the water body.

Tragically, they reportedly moved into a deeper section of the canal and subsequently drowned. Upon witnessing the distress, local residents and family members quickly rushed to the scene and initiated rescue efforts. Despite their swift response and earnest attempts, the two teenagers could not be saved.

The untimely deaths have left the entire community in profound shock and sorrow. Family members, including Abhinav Sinha's father, Sukanta Sinha, and other villagers gathered at the site, struggling to come to terms with the sudden and immense loss of the two young lives. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the unforeseen dangers associated with water bodies, leaving Chiporsangan Village reeling from an irreparable tragedy.
