All schools in Meghalaya are directed not to hold any outdoor activities or sports during the current heatwave...

Digital Desk: Following the footsteps of Tripura, Meghalaya also declared the closure of all educational institutions in certain portions of the state due to a heatwave till April 21. This is the first such case in a state recognised for its nice weather and abundant rain.

Concerning the present heat wave that has struck across the state and some regions in particular, and with the health and well-being of children in mind, the following directions are issued to all schools for immediate compliance:

I. All schools are being urged not to organise any outdoor activities or sports during this current heat wave or any future heat waves.

2. For security concerns all kids should stay hydrated by drinking water on a regular basis.  If student become dehydrated, ORS/lemon water should be offered immediately to them. Every child should be encouraged to bring a water bottle with them.

3. Prolonged exposure to heat, especially between 12 and 3 p.m., should be avoided. Students should be encouraged to bring umbrellas to and from school.

4. It should also be assured that pupils do not walk barefoot inside or near the school grounds.

5. In cases of severe dehydration, children should be brought to the nearest health centre right away.

Previously, the West Garo Hills District administration decided that all Primary, Middle, Secondary, and Higher Secondary school activities in the district will be suspended throughout the day (8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.) from April 19 to April 21, 2023.

Evening and night schools, on the other hand, will continue to operate as usual.
