Originally constructed by the British during World War II, Rupsi Airport served as a crucial strategic military airfield. Spanning an expansive area of nearly 2,500 bighas, its wartime infrastructure was formidable, featuring a 6,000-foot runway, a dedicated terminal building, ample vehicle parking facilities, and an impressive 52 aircraft hangars. This extensive setup was vital for facilitating the swift movement of troops, equipment, and essential supplies across the region during the conflict.
Post-independence, the airport's role evolved, but this latest initiative aims to repurpose its considerable infrastructure for modern economic development. By converting it into a major logistics centre, authorities envision Rupsi becoming a dynamic gateway for goods and services, stimulating economic growth and creating new opportunities for businesses and residents in the surrounding areas of western Assam. This development is expected to leverage the airport's existing capabilities while expanding its capacity to meet contemporary logistical demands.
