Digital Desk: Following the Supreme Court's stay of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's conviction in a defamation case, Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal remarked on Saturday that he had previously maintained that the conviction was unnecessary and lamented that "court procedures are used for political agendas."

The Supreme Court delayed Gandhi's conviction in a 2019 criminal defamation case over his Modi surname comment on Friday, paving the route for his reinstatement as a Lok Sabha MP.

The stay, which will also allow Gandhi, to run in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, was granted because the trial court in Surat, Gujarat, failed to explain why he deserved the maximum two-year sentence following his conviction, which resulted in his disqualification from the Lower House of Parliament.

The Supreme Court further stated that if the punishment had been a day shorter, it would not have resulted in disqualification.

"Supreme Court stays Rahul's conviction," Sibal tweeted. On the day Rahul was convicted, I stated publicly that the conviction was unjustified and would not stand. The reason I offered was based on what the Supreme Court said yesterday. Unfortunately, that court procedures are being used for political agendas!" he exclaimed.

With the assistance of the Samajwadi Party, former Union minister Kapil Sibal during UPA I and II left the Congress in May of last year and was elected to the Rajya Sabha as an Independent. Insaaf, his non-electoral agenda, is intended to oppose injustice.
