Rainfall in Assam and neighbouring states is expected to be light to moderate in several locations...

Digital Desk: Northeastern areas, including Assam, are likely to breathe a sigh of relief as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts that the monsoon will arrive within the next 48 hours.

In a long-range weather forecast issued on Wednesday, the IMD stated, "A cyclonic circulation over east-central Bay of Bengal off Myanmar coast persists, extending up to 5.8 km above mean sea level." The cyclonic circulation over south Chhattisgarh and its surroundings has weakened. The trough in mid-tropospheric westerlies, with its axis at 5.8 km above mean sea level, has become less prominent along Long.82°E and to the north of Lat. 27°N."

The IMD acknowledged in its report that this phenomenon has made circumstances appropriate for the onset of a southwest monsoon across parts of the northeast area over the next 48 hours.

On day 1, the meteorological department forecasts light to moderate rain in a few locations in Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura, as well as light rain in scattered places across Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Meghalaya. However, daytime temperatures in several sections of the region are highly likely to reach (4-6)°C above normal.

On day 2, the IMD predicts mild to moderate rain in numerous locations in Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura, as well as in a few spots across Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Meghalaya. Similarly, as on day 1, day temperatures are quite likely to remain above normal by (4-6)°C over several sections of the NE region.

Assam and its neighbouring states are anticipated to see light to moderate rainfall activity in several places on day 3.

On days 4 and 5, the meteorological service forecasted light to moderate rainfall in Assam and other Northeastern states.

Notably, many regions of the Northeastern state, including Assam, have been experiencing severe heatwave conditions for the previous few weeks, with daytime temperatures rising by 4°C to 6°C (above average).
