In the World Cup, Rohit Sharma's shift in strategy has paid off as the captain has amassed almost 500 runs at a strike rate of over 120, playing brave cricket at the highest level.

Digital Desk: Rohit Sharma, the captain of India, is breaking records one after another. The captain gave India an early advantage against the Netherlands in their last league match of the tournament on Sunday in Bengaluru, continuing his merciless run to the top of the ODI World Cup.

Bengaluru witnessed fireworks on Diwali Day, this time from the two Indian openers, Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill, who attacked the Netherlands bowlers after Rohit Sharma won the toss and chose to bat. In just eight overs, India quickly reached 73 for 0. In the first eight overs of the match, two hitters had smashed eight boundaries and four sixes.

When India defeated South Africa, Rohit Sharma and AB de Villiers were equal for the most sixes a batsman in One Day International cricket has struck in a calendar year. When he blasted Colin Ackermann, an off-spinner, over the long-on stands in the seventh over of the match on Sunday, Rohit broke the record.

MOST SIXES IN ODIS IN A CALENDAR YEAR

Rohit Sharma - 59 in 2023 in 24 innings

AB de Villiers - 58 in 2015 in 18 innings

Chris Gayle - 56 sixes 2019 in 15 innings

Shahid Afridi - 48 sixes in 2002 in 36 innings

In the opening over of the game, Rohit Sharma hit off-spinner Aryan Dutt for two boundaries. As soon as he made his intentions clear, Rohit swept Aryan and did not attempt to control it.

Shubman Gill, who was also in the mood to destroy the Dutch bowlers, accelerated over 40 and had already struck four sixes. On the day of the festival, M Chinnaswamy Stadium was filling up, and the two Indian openers provided the spectators with some brutal and excellent hitting.

After winning eight straight matches, India was in no hurry to ease up and headed into the encounter with an unchanged playing eleven. With a semi-final spot guaranteed, India will play New Zealand in Mumbai on Wednesday in a rematch of the 2019 championship match.
