India was called in to bat, and after 47.3 overs, they were all out for 219 runs, with the majority of runs coming from Washington Sundar (51) and Shreyas Iyer (49). When the rain started, New Zealand was well positioned at 104 for one after 18 overs.

The umpires decided to cancel the match because the rain showed no signs of stopping.

The first ODI was won by New Zealand by seven wickets at Hamilton. The second match was similarly cancelled.
