According to the Head of an Indian medicine export committee on Thursday, India, one of the world's top pharmaceutical producers, is preparing to enhance fever medication exports to China, which is dealing with a spike in COVID-19 cases.

As a result of China's surprise easing of the severe COVID-19 requirements earlier this month, demand for fever drugs and viral test kits skyrocketed on the mainland, leading merchants to set purchase limitations and pharmaceutical companies to ramp up production.

According to Reuters, Sahil Munjal, chairman of the Pharmaceuticals Export Promotion Council of India (Pharmexcil), "marketing requests are going to drugmakers asking for bids on ibuprofen and paracetamol."

Ibuprofen and paracetamol are currently in low supply in China due to increased demand.

The Chinese embassy in New Delhi has not yet responded. According to India's foreign ministry, the country was ready to aid China. India is one of the world's major makers of generic pharmaceuticals.

Arindam Bagchi, a foreign ministry spokesperson, announced during a routine press briefing, "We are monitoring the COVID situation in China. As the world's pharmacy, we have always assisted other countries."

According to the most recent annual report from Pharmexcil, India's pharmaceutical exports to China accounted for only 1.4% of total exports in 2021-2022. The United States remains India's largest pharmaceutical export market.

Concerns of a COVID-19 resurgence have boosted shares of Indian pharmaceutical companies in recent days.
