El Nino occurs due to changes in the surface temperature of the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Peru...

Digital Desk: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) report has forecasted a warmer start to India's summer season this year due to the continuation of El Nino conditions.

Particularly, regions such as Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, the north interior of Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Odisha are anticipated to experience more heatwave days than usual. Additionally, March is predicted to witness above-normal rainfall, exceeding 117 percent of the long-period average of 29.9 mm.

El Nino occurs due to changes in the surface temperature of the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Peru, its effects in general, and its effect in India. It is a climate pattern that describes the unusual warming of surface waters in the eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean.

IMD Director General, Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, stated during a press conference that both maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to be above normal across most parts of India from March to May.

Notably, March will likely not witness heatwave conditions in north and central India. These projections are significant considering the upcoming Lok Sabha elections scheduled for April and May.

Mohapatra emphasized the continuation of El Nino conditions throughout the summer season, characterized by the periodic warming of waters in the central Pacific Ocean. However, he mentioned the likelihood of transitioning to neutral conditions thereafter. Interestingly, the onset of La Nina conditions, typically associated with favorable monsoon rainfall in India, is anticipated in the latter half of the monsoon season.
