Digital Desk: Indian-American US Navy veteran Shanti Sethi has joined Vice President Kamala Harris's office as her executive secretary and defence adviser, media reports said.

Shanti Sethi, the first Indian-American commander of a major US Navy battleship, joined Vice President Harris's office, Politico said, quoting Vice President's senior adviser Herbie Ziskend.

According to her LinkedIn page, Shanti Sethi manages National Security Adviser information across the Vice President's Office.

From December 2010 to May 2012, Shanti Sethi headed the guided-missile warship, USS Decatur. In addition, she was the first female commander of a US navy ship to visit India.

The combat exclusion law was still in effect when she joined the Navy in 1993; thus, her options were limited. Although, the Exclusion Act was lifted when she became an officer.

"As I was going into this very male-dominated workplace. I was able to move on to have a career path that was much more available to me," Sethi told to USA Today in an interview.

In the early 1960s, Shanti Sethi's father came to the United States from India.
