The bill will also establish an inspection process overseen by an appointed government official and set sanctions for any violations of the law.

Digital Desk: The Lok Sabha passed the Indian Antarctic Bill, 2022, on Friday. The measure aims to make Indian research sites in the Antarctic region subject to domestic legislation.

Notably, the Indian Antarctica Bill, 2022 was brought up for discussion as soon as the House reconvened today following the second break of the day. It was proposed by Earth Sciences Minister Jitendra Singh.

Moreover, the proposed law would forbid any Indian expedition to the Antarctic without a permit or the written consent of another signatory to the Antarctic Treaty. It would also establish an inspection process overseen by an appointed government official and set sanctions for any violations of the law.

Additionally, it aims to create a fund to support Antarctic scientific projects and safeguard the region's ecosystem.

Meanwhile, in the Antarctic, scientists do study in the two current Indian research stations known as Maitri and Bharti.

Notably, the House adjourned for the day shortly after passing the Bill and will reconvene at 2:00 PM on Monday.
