The opening match saw Gurveer Singh engage in a thrilling five-game contest against the USA's Brendan Tagliarini. Despite Gurveer's valiant effort, Tagliarini, celebrating his 17th birthday, rallied from a 2-1 deficit to clinch the match with scores of 11-7, 9-11, 6-11, 11-7, 11-3, giving the American side an early lead.
