  • A prominent Nazira baker, Pankaj Dutta, who provided employment to 35 local youths, has lost everything in the recent devastating floods, highlighting the severe economic and emotional toll on the region

While floodwaters have begun to recede across Nazira, the profound distress among affected residents persists, particularly in areas like Holongkhatani. Survivors are now confronted with the monumental task of clearing mud-filled homes and grappling with deep financial and emotional trauma.

Among the many heartbreaking stories emerging from the calamity is that of Pankaj Dutta, a respected young entrepreneur. Until the recent disaster struck, Dutta was a pillar of his community, operating a successful bakery that employed 35 local youths. Known for his generosity and commitment to aiding others, he now finds himself among the most vulnerable, his life's work obliterated.

Recalling the harrowing night of July 19, Dutta described the event not as a flood, but as an instantaneous catastrophe. “It didn’t feel like a flood—it was like a catastrophe. Within just 10 minutes, water engulfed our house,” he recounted. His immediate priority was the safety of his family. “I rushed my parents to the rooftop and left everything else behind.” As he shared his ordeal, the last remnants of his destroyed belongings were being carted away for disposal, a stark visual of his immense loss.

The sudden and violent deluge spared little, destroying almost all contents within his home and, by extension, his bakery business. Dutta's plight underscores the broader devastation in Nazira, where countless families are struggling to rebuild their lives and livelihoods in the wake of the unprecedented natural disaster.
