Digital Desk: The Indian Navy Day is observed every year on 4th December 4 to celebrate the courage, discipline and enduring strength of the Indian Navy. The day marks the important role of the Navy in ensuring the maritime boundaries of India, guarding the important sea trade routes and reacting well to crises. It also reflects on the expanding strategic potentials and the resolve by the Navy to emerge as a powerful maritime force in the Indian Ocean, having much emphasis on self-sufficiency, domestic technology and operational readiness.

The celebration of Navy Day traces its origins to Operation Trident, a decisive naval assault carried out on December 4, 1971 during the Indo-Pak War. The Indian Navy missile boats carried out a successful attack on Pakistan Karachi Harbour under this operation destroying fuel depots, supply ships and major land installations. These attacks caused a great casualty to the naval power of Pakistan. Meanwhile, air operation on the INS Vikrant , sent to enemy airfields in Chittagong and Khulna, with valuable contributions to the victory of India.

This combined attack made 4th December  the date when the naval perfection and military genius of India would be remembered.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is widely regarded as the ‘Father of the Indian Navy’. His visionary maritime strategies, creation of a powerful coastal defence system and establishment of a strong naval force laid the foundation for India’s naval prowess. In an era when the European nations controlled the seas, Shivaji had realised the value of sea power, the defence of Konkan coast, preservation of trade routes and resistance to foreign influence. His legacy was established by his foresight as the architect of the Indian naval power.
