In 1966, the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) declared September 8 as Literacy Day. Since then, the day has been marked to highlight the importance of literacy for individuals, communities, and societies.

This year's Literacy Day theme is "Transforming Literacy Learning Spaces." UNESCO emphasizes that this Literacy Day will provide a chance to reconsider the fundamental significance of literacy learning environments in order to foster resilience and guarantee high-quality, equitable, and inclusive education for everyone.
Why is Literacy Day celebrated?
Literacy, defined as the capacity to read and write, can be used to construct a more literate and sustainable society. According to UNESCO, achieving global literacy remains a struggle, with over 771 million illiterate people in the world. The majority of these are women, who are more vulnerable since they lack fundamental abilities like reading and writing.
Although efforts have been made to address the literacy issue, recent years have seen a slowdown in the process. UNESCO estimates that 24 million people may not be able to return to formal schooling following the pandemic. 11 million of them are projected to be young girls and women.
