Digital Desk: The political relationship between Baghbor legislator Sherman Ali Ahmed and the Congress party has turned bitter in due time.
Earlier in October Sherman Ali was suspended from the Congress party with immediate effect for “ repeatedly violating” the party’s discipline.
The APCC president Bhupen Kumar Borah, by an order, suspended Ahmed from Congress.
Ahmed reportedly made the "communal" remarks while reacting to assertions by some leaders of the BJP-led ruling alliance that the alleged encroachers in the Sipajhar area of Darrang district had "killed" eight people in 1983 during the six-year-long Assam agitation.
The MLA claimed that the eight people who died in the agitation were "not martyrs, but killers",
He had presumably said that "the attack" on the eight people was an act of "self-defense" by the Muslim population of that area.
His comments evoked strong reactions across Assam and multiple FIRs were filed against him. He was later arrested from his official residence in Guwahati on October 2.
The state's ruling alliance partner, Asom Gana Parishad, born out of the Assam agitation, had organized protests at various places, including Dibrugarh, Barpeta, Mangaldoi, Dhemaji, Tezpur, Biswanath, Nalbari, Bongaigaon, Majuli, and Morigaon, and burnt effigies of the Congress MLA.
Though a court here in Guwahati offered bail to the Baghbor legislator as the police failed to present the charge sheet against him on time, he was released after two months.
The political war between Sherman Ali and the congress party has taken a new turn right after he came out of custody.
In his recent statement he said that the Congress party had asked him that if he wished his suspension from the party lifted, he needed to stop speaking about minority concerns.
The controversial statements made by Sherman Ali have opened gates for other political parties to take political opportunities in due time.
Recently, The All India Democratic Front (AIUDF) has set a red carpet to welcome Legislator Sherman Ali to AIUDF.
The General Secretary of the AIUDF and Mankachar MLA Aminul Islam informed the media that if Sherman Ali wants to come back to the party, he will be forever welcomed. He also stated that it will be like him coming back home.
The General Secretary of the party further alleged that the Chief Minister of Assam has made worse statements than those of Sherman Ali in front of the media from time to time, according to him the CM of Assam speaks like an activist and not a leader.
The above-mentioned statement made by Aminul Islam has set a wave of speculations in the Assam political scenario.
Now it will be interesting to watch if Sherman Ali returns back to the basics or if any other party jumps in to fulfill ‘ political desires’.
