EC removed 87 political parties from its list for making false donations and engaging in tax fraud in May after they claimed I-T exemption without following the law's standards.
Digital Desk: The Income Tax Department conducted searches across numerous states on Wednesday as part of a tax fraud investigation into registered unrecognized political parties (RUPP) and their suspected questionable funding, reported according to official sources. Raids are being carried out in Delhi, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and a few more states.
In May, the Election Commission of India initiated action against political parties that claimed I-T exemption without following legislative criteria, and it erased 87 entities off its list of RUPP after they were discovered to be non-existent during physical verification.
The poll panel had declared that it will take action against over 2,100 registered unrecognized political parties for breaking regulations and election laws, including those registering monetary donations and neglecting to update their address and office holder identities. According to the report, several of these parties were engaging in significant financial misconduct.
In 2018, the I-T department warned citizens to avoid unlawful monetary transactions, like as giving more than Rs 2000 to political parties.
In early 2018, the government announced the availability of 'electoral bonds,' which may be purchased from specific State Bank of India (SBI) branches and used to give money to political parties.
