Digital Desk: In a bid to tackle violations of traffic rules in Guwahati, police have activated the Integrated Traffic Management System (ITMS) cameras in the city.
As Guwahati prepares for the Durga Puja celebration, traffic police have increased their vigilance by turning on ITMS cameras in various locations throughout the city to keep a close check on anyone breaking the law. Police officers would no longer be physically present on Guwahati's roadways; instead, of interacting with violators in person, they will send them an SMS within 24 hours that displays their e-challans on their phones.
The National Information Centre (NIC) will keep an eye on the 61 Internet Protocol (IP) cameras placed throughout the city, stated DCP Traffic Jayanta Sarathi Borah.
He further stated that the Intelligent Traffic Management System records video for analysis using regular IP surveillance cameras. Here, the DCP Traffic urged the public to buckle up when riding a four-wheeled vehicle and to wear helmets while riding two-wheelers.
The DCP Traffic added that since Guwahati city's ITMS was implemented last year, the city police had been able to collect up to Rs 15 lakh a day from violators.
It is noteworthy that Guwahati implemented the ITMS last year in order to guarantee efficient traffic flow, monitor infractions, and provide e-challans.
The ITMS system has been turned on full force to monitor the traffic infraction events, which sharply rise during Durga Puja and Diwali celebrations.
