Digital Desk: England's Test captain Joe Root has achieved a new milestone in his career, as he has become the highest-scoring batsman in Test cricket for England. Root achieved this feat on the fourth day of the second Test match against Australia in Adelaide.

Root surpassed former captain Alistair Cook's 4844 runs. As captain, Cook's runs came in 59 test matches, while Root left Cook behind in the 58th match. Root has scored 4859 runs at an average of 47.63 in 58 Tests as captain. During this time, he has scored 12 centuries with his bat.

Michael Atherton is in third place with 3815 runs, followed by Graham Gooch (3582) and Andrew Strauss (3343) in the top five English captains.

Cook said to media, "Another record that went to Root, I don't have much left. He is slowly but surely making his mark as England's greatest batsman and he is doing very well there."

58 Tests 4859 runs - Joe Root

59 Test 4844 runs - Alastair Cook

54 Test 3815 runs - Mike Atherton

Joe Root has scored 1630 runs at an average of 62.69 in test matches this year. Moreover, he is the first player to score more than 1600 Test runs in a calendar year since former South African captain Graeme Smith, who scored 1656 runs in 2008.
