Jorhat, Assam: Police in Jorhat have apprehended an alleged arms trafficker and seized a pistol, live ammunition, and a motorcycle, with investigators exploring a suspected inter-state link to neighbouring Nagaland. The arrest, made on Saturday, follows a targeted operation in the heart of Jorhat town.
The accused, identified as Sanjib Barua, a resident of Dimapur district in Nagaland, was taken into custody at Nandanpur on Jail Road. A 7.65 mm pistol, three rounds of live ammunition, and a Pulsar motorcycle (bearing registration AS-03S-5153) were recovered from his possession during the operation.
According to police, Barua had been under sustained surveillance based on intelligence inputs concerning his alleged involvement in illicit activities. Inspector Utpal Dutta of the Jorhat Traffic Branch, who led the operation, confirmed that a police team had been monitoring Barua's movements for several hours before successfully apprehending him after a brief chase in the Nandanpur area.
"We had been receiving specific intelligence regarding his activities," an official stated, adding, "Barua's residence has been traced to Dimapur, and he is suspected to be involved in various other anti-social and criminal activities. Further details are expected to emerge as the investigation progresses."
Investigators strongly suspect that the seized firearm was transported into Assam from Nagaland, highlighting concerns about cross-border arms movement. The ongoing probe aims to uncover the full extent of Barua's network and potential deeper ramifications for regional security.
