Digital Desk: Jorhat Police has dismantled a major honey-trapping racket targeting high-profile businessmen and government officials.
The operation led to the arrest of five individuals, including the alleged mastermind, Moromi Das Neog.
According to police reports, Moromi initiated contact with wealthy victims via Instagram, using the platform to lure them into romantic traps.
The targets were then invited to her rented apartment near the Jorhat ISBT, where accomplices lay in wait.
These individuals secretly recorded intimate moments on their mobile phones, which the gang subsequently used to blackmail the victims for large sums of money.
The racket was exposed after a bank manager from Tinsukia, who had already paid the gang nearly Rs 3 lakh, was pressured for an additional Rs 5 lakh.
Refusing to comply further, the victim filed an FIR at the Jorhat Sadar Police Station on October 2.
Following a targeted investigation, Jorhat Sadar Police arrested five suspects: Moromi Das Neog (alias Nimisha), Baby Bora, Ankit Paul, Sanjeev Das, and Moromi's husband, Ankit Bora.
Preliminary findings indicate that the gang has targeted numerous individuals, many of whom have suffered devastating financial ruin.
