  • Hundreds of families across Jorhat's Teok-Mariani region are confronting widespread destruction, with homes and livelihoods washed away, as they begin the arduous process of rebuilding from scratch

Though the floodwaters have largely receded across parts of Jorhat district, the grim reality of the devastation is only now fully emerging for hundreds of families. Villages nestled along the Jaji river, once vibrant communities, now stand as stark landscapes of broken homes, collapsed river embankments, and scattered belongings, leaving residents with the daunting task of rebuilding their lives from the ground up.

The impact is particularly severe across the Teok-Mariani region, affecting communities such as Bonai, Dhantola, Ouguri, Kawaimari, and Gosaibari. Many residents, returning from temporary relief camps, were met with heartbreaking scenes of what remained of their properties. The emotional toll is evident, as years of hard work and savings have been swept away in a single night.

Survivors recounted harrowing experiences, with floodwaters surging through villages in the early hours, forcing quick escapes with only a few essential possessions. "Our house has collapsed, the verandah is gone, and the flood carried away our gas cylinder, kitchen utensils, everything we owned," one resident shared, adding that many are still desperately searching for missing livestock. The agricultural losses are also significant, with many attempting to salvage what little remains, including the painstaking process of drying out ruined rice.

For these communities, the immediate challenge extends beyond mere repairs; it is about reconstructing entire lives. The scale of the destruction signifies a long and arduous journey ahead, underscoring the resilience required to overcome such widespread calamity.
