Locals accuse the forest authorities of neglect because the elephant had been ill for a while and was denied medical care.

Digital Desk: An adult female elephant's carcass was found inexplicably close to Deepor Beel, a neighbourhood on the outskirts of Guwahati on Tuesday.

Notably, the dead jumbo's three-year-old offspring was found a few days ago in the same area.

The elephant had been wandering around the neighbourhood since then.

Locals accuse the forest authorities of neglect because the elephant had been ill for a while and was denied medical care.

At Mariani under Assam's Jorhat district, an adult elephant tragically perished last week after being struck by a speeding train.

The giant was reportedly struck by a Kamrup Express train as it attempted to cross the rails with its herd.

Although the herd successfully crossed the tracks, one of them was unable to do so in time and was killed when it was struck by the train.

Trains were delayed for a short while after the event.

Authorities from the forest arrived quickly and removed the carcass.
