Digital Desk: A tragic road accident occurred in Guwahati on the day of Saraswati Puja.
A 22-year-old woman lost her life after being hit by a 108 Mrityunjay ambulance. The deceased has been identified as Luna Bharadwaj, a resident of North Salmara in Bongaigaon district.
Additionally, a 24-year-old youth named Achyut Baruah from Dergaon sustained severe injuries in the accident.
Both victims were immediately rushed to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), where Luna Bharadwaj was declared dead by the doctors.
Meanwhile, Achyut Baruah, who sustained critical injuries to his abdomen and legs, is currently undergoing treatment in the ICU at GMCH.
According to Dr. Devajit Choudhury, Superintendent of GMCH, the victims were brought to the hospital around 6:11 pm on Friday evening.
Luna had already succumbed to her injuries at the scene, while Achyut was admitted with severe injuries.
The post-mortem examination of the deceased woman is scheduled for Saturday morning.
Dr. Choudhury further mentioned that GMCH has an adequate number of ward boys and assured that strict action would be taken against any ward boy found misbehaving with patients.
Following the incident, the ambulance driver, identified as Rekibuddin Ahmed, fled the scene. Dispur police have since seized the Mrityunjay ambulance.
Meanwhile, the All Assam 108 Mrityunjay Employees' Association expressed deep sorrow over the incident.
The association alleged that such tragic accidents occur due to inexperienced drivers being employed to operate the vehicles instead of experienced ones.
