Digital Desk: Karnataka's Assembly elections begin on Wednesday (May 10), with voters flocking to the polling stations in their respective constituencies. Across Karnataka, voter turnout stood at 8.26% as of 9 a.m. The district with the highest voter turnout so far was Udupi, with 13.28%, followed by Dakshina Kannada and Kodagu, with 12.47% and 11.94%, respectively. The Chamarajanagar district had the lowest turnout with 5.75%, followed by Chitradurga and Yadgir with 6.08% and 6.75%, respectively.
The Karnataka Assembly has 224 seats, and a party or alliance must cross the halfway point of 112 to establish the government. In 2018, the BJP won 104 seats, the Congress 78 seats, and the JD(S) 37 seats. Following bye-elections in 2019, the BJP walked away with Congress and JD(S) legislators, bringing their total numbers in the Assembly to 120, while the Congress was reduced to 69 and the JD(S) to 32.
This time, the Congress campaign has primarily focused on the shortcomings of the incumbent BJP. The BJP has attempted to counter this by evoking the Prime Minister's charm and the power of a 'double engine' government. Meanwhile, the JD(S) has been asking for the rejection of both national parties.
