The Kochi Metro Rail Project's second phase, which will include 11 stations and span more than 11 kilometres, was certified by the Union Cabinet costing Rs 1,957 crore.
Digital Desk: The Union Cabinet sanctioned the second phase of the Kochi Metro Rail project on Wednesday, which will have 11 stations along a length of more than 11 kilometres and will cost Rs 1,957 crore.
The government said in a statement following the cabinet meeting that preliminary work for the second phase, including road widening on the Seaport Airport Road, is going well.
The first phase in Kochi, which runs from Aluva to Petta and covers a distance of 25.6 kilometres with 22 stops at an estimated cost of Rs.5181.79 crore, is now fully operational.
The second phase will pass through Kakkanad on its way from JLN Stadium to Infopark.
The Kochi Metro Phase 1A project of a 1.80 km viaduct between Petta and SN Junction is being implemented as a state sector project at a cost of Rs 710.93 crore.
Kochi Metro Phase 1 B, a 1.20-kilometre stretch from SN Junction to Thripunithura Terminal, is also under construction as a state-funded project.
Kochi is Kerala's most densely populated city, and it is part of an extensive metropolitan region that is the state's largest urban agglomeration.
The Kochi metropolitan area's population is expected to be at 20.8 lakh in 2013, 25.8 lakh in 2021, and 33.12 lakh by 2031.
