Digital Desk: Lt Gen Manoj Pande succeeded Lt Gen Lieutenant General Chandi Prasad Mohanty as the new Vice Chief of the Indian Army on Tuesday (February 1). After heading the eastern command in Kolkata, Pande comes to Army headquarters. The Eastern Command is in charge of keeping an eye on China in the eastern sector, including states such as Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim. Pande, a graduate of the National Defence Academy, was commissioned into the Corps of Engineers (The Bombay Sappers) in December 1982. During Operation Parakram in the sensitive Pallanwala Sector along the Jammu and Kashmir Line of Control, the General Officer commanded an Engineer Regiment. He attended the Higher Command (HC) and National Defence College (NDC) Courses at Staff College in Camberley, United Kingdom. “Throughout his distinguished military career, he has held important and challenging command and staff positions in a variety of operational environments, including command of an Engineer Brigade of the Strike Corps in the Western Theatre, Infantry Brigade along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir, Mountain Division in the High Altitude Area of Western Ladakh, a Corps in the North East, Commander-in-Chief Andaman & Nicobar Command (CINCAN), and General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Eastern Command.” a statement from Ministry of Defence read. Moreover, he also served the positions of Brigade Major of a Mountain Brigade in the North East, Assistant Military Secretary (AMS) in the Military Secretary’s Branch as a Colonel in the Mountain Division in the High Altitude Area, and Brigade General Staff (Operations) at Headquarters Eastern Command. In addition, the General Officer worked as Chief Engineer for the UN Mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea. Additionally, he held positions at Army Headquarters as Additional Director General (ADGMO-B) in the Military Operations Directorate, Chief of Staff at Headquarters Southern Command, and Director General Discipline Ceremonial & Welfare. For his distinguished service, he has received the Param Vishisht Seva Medal, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, Vishisht Seva Medal, the Chief of Army Staff Commendation, and GOC-in-C Commendation twice.
