Digital Desk: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has received Rs 911.87 crore in the Union Budget for the fiscal year 2022-23, a minor rise of around 4.75 percent over the previous year. Reportedly, the CBI is swamped with several bank fraud cases, ongoing high-profile extradition cases in foreign courts, and criminal cases handed over to it by various states, High Courts, and the Supreme Court. According to a recent Parliamentary Panel report, the agency has 883 vacancies out of a total of 7,273 approved cadre strength. The agency was assigned Rs 835.39 crore to administer its business in 2021-22, which was later enhanced to Rs 870.50 crore in the Revised Estimates included in Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman's Budget paper issued Tuesday. "The allocation is for establishment-related expenditures of the Central Bureau of Investigation, which is tasked with investigating and prosecuting corruption cases involving public officials, private individuals, businesses, and other major crimes." according to the Budget paper. According to the report, this includes funding for projects such as CBI's renovation of training centres, the establishment of technical and forensic support units, comprehensive modernization, and the purchase of land/construction of office/residential structures.
