Wakode was reportedly booked for the deaths of an infant and his mother at the hospital...

Digital Desk: A case has been registered against Shyam Wakode, Dean of Dr Shankarrao Chavan Government Medical College and Hospital in central Maharashtra's Nanded district, after the death of multiple patients at the hospital within 48 hours. Meanwhile, a case has been lodged against the hospital superintendent and several other doctors.

Wakode was reportedly booked for the deaths of an infant and his mother at the hospital. The woman and the child's relatives filed a complaint in this regard.

At least 31 deaths, including those of infants, were recorded at the hospital in the past 48 hours since September 30.

Between October 2 and 3, six further deaths were reported, according to an official informed news agency, PTI, on Wednesday.

The relatives of several deceased patients have accused the hospital of incompetence and a lack of medication, but Maharashtra Medical Education Minister Hasan Mushrif said on Tuesday that an investigation will be conducted to determine the cause of the fatalities. Additionally, he promised that the hospital's facilities would be improved in the following 15 days.

Mushrif added that there was no shortage of medications at the facility and stated that if the deaths occurred due to anyone's negligence, action would be taken against them immediately.

Earlier on Wednesday, the Congress accused Maharashtra government of "criminal negligence" in connection with the death case and asked why medicines were "not procured on time" for the patients.

The Maharashtra government also denied that there was a medicine shortage at the hospital, although it did promise to take necessary measures following a thorough investigation into the circumstances behind the fatalities.
