According to officials, 10 bodies were found on the upper story of a structure that was burned in the fire, and 9 Indians were reportedly killed in the blaze.

Digital Desk: A fire that swept through crowded housing of foreign workers in Male, the capital of the Maldives, resulted in 10 deaths and multiple injuries, news agency AFP reported.

According to officials, 10 bodies were found on the upper story of a structure that was burned in the fire, and 9 Indians were reportedly killed in the blaze.

According to reports, the ground-floor car repair shop is where the fire started.

"We have found 10 bodies," a fire service official told AFP, adding that it took them about four hours to put out the fire.
The Indian High Commission in the Maldives expressed sorrow over the incident and stated that they are in constant contact with the Maldivian government.

"We are deeply saddened by the tragic fire incident in Malé which has caused loss of lives, including reportedly of Indian nationals," the high commission said in a tweet.
Meanwhile, the National Disaster Management Authority of Maldives said that an evacuation centre has been set up in a nearby stadium.

“NDMA has established an evacuation center in Maafannu Stadium for those displaced and affected by the fire in Male’. Arrangements are being made to provide relief assistance and support,” it said in a tweet.

About half of Male's 250,000 residents are said to be foreign workers, most of whom are from Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. The Covid epidemic exposed the subpar living circumstances for immigrant workers since the virus spread three times as quickly among them as it did among locals.
