Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge opposes Assam's delimitation exercise and is joined in a protest at Jantar Mantar...

Digital Desk: On Friday, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge expressed strong opposition to the Assam delimitation exercise, saying it required wider support and consensus.

Leaders of 11 opposition parties will also stage a dharna at Jantar Mantar in protest of the election, after which they will hand over a memorandum to the Election Commission.

On Thursday evening, opposition leaders met with the Congress president and handed over a representation outlining their collective objections to the delimitation exercise. "The delimitation exercise in Assam requires broader acceptance and consensus across the political spectrum," Kharge tweeted.

"Leaders of 11 opposition parties, including AICC General Secretary Shri @JitendraSAlwar, Congress Party Deputy Leader (Lok Sabha), Shri @GouravAssam, PCC President Shri @BhupenKBorah, CLP Leader Shri @DsaikiaOfficial, and other members of @INCAssam, handed over a representation to me regarding our collective objections to the delimitation exercise in the state," he tweeted.

"A memorandum in this regard will be given to the Election Commission." "Today, these leaders will sit on a dharna at Jantar Mantar," the Congress chairman added.

Kharge stated that the problem will be addressed in all appropriate forums.

The Election Commission recommended keeping the number of assembly seats in Assam at 126 and the number of Lok Sabha constituencies at 14 in the draught delimitation paper released on June 20.

The Commission also intends to change the geographical borders of the majority of assembly and Lok Sabha constituencies, while removing some seats and creating a few new ones.

Protests have been held in the state by both opposition parties and allies of the incumbent BJP-led coalition government.
