Digital Desk: The Supreme Court (SC) on Tuesday rejected an urgent hearing on a plea filed by the Manipur Tribal Forum demanding Indian Army protection for the Kuki tribe. The Supreme Court then scheduled a hearing for July 3 and stated that it is completely a matter of law and order. The Centre in this case stated that security agencies are on the ground and doing all possible to contain the situation.

A vacation bench comprising Justices Surya Kant and M M Sundresh stated that it is entirely an issue of law and order. On behalf of the NGO Manipur Tribal Forum, senior advocate Colin Gonsalves raised the issue. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta stated that security agencies are present on the spot and rejected the request for an expedited hearing.

According to the Manipur Tribal Forum, the central government and Manipur's chief minister have collaborated on a communal agenda aiming at "ethnic cleansing" of Kuki tribals in the northeastern state.

The NGO urged the top court not to depend on the centre's "empty assurances" and requested Army protection for Kuki tribals.

More than 100 people have died in Manipur's conflict between the Meitei and Kuki communities, which began over a month ago.

Clashes first erupted in Manipur on May 3 following a 'Tribal Solidarity March' in the hill districts to oppose the Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.

Meiteis make up around 53% of Manipur's population and reside primarily in the Imphal Valley. Tribals, such as the Nagas and Kukis, make up another 40% of the population and live in the hill districts.
