Digital Desk: Idashisha Nongrang, Meghalaya's first female Director General of Police (DGP), expressed deep concern regarding the rising incidents of crimes against women and children in the state. A conference convened at the Meghalaya Police Headquarters, chaired by Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, focused squarely on this critical issue.
Following the conference, DGP Nongrang emphasized that tackling the increase in such crimes was a top priority. She highlighted that in 2023, chargesheets were filed in 65 percent of cases, with crimes against women and children comprising 32 percent of the total, underscoring the seriousness of the situation.
The conference also addressed various challenges confronting the police department. Discussing the surge in cybercrimes, Nongrang emphasized its significance and disclosed plans for establishing a dedicated cyber wing, which has received initial approval from the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister.
Regarding the implementation of three new criminal laws nationwide, Nongrang mentioned conducting multiple training sessions aimed at ensuring effective enforcement. She noted ongoing discussions with the Home Ministry and other states on best practices and highlighted a recent panel discussion dedicated to exploring these aspects.
