Digital Desk: The Meghalaya Police used tear gas against contractual teachers who took their families to protest in front of the main secretariat in Shillong.

The teachers claimed that the tear gas had a significant impact on children and pregnant women.

The All Meghalaya Government LP School Contractual Teachers' Association's president, Birbor Riangtem, reportedly also suffered injuries as police attempted to stop the members from moving towards the Secretariat.

The contractual teachers kept marching even after this, as section 144 CrPC was being enforced in the Secretariat hills.

The All Meghalaya Government LP School Contractual Teachers' Association president asserted that the location of their demonstration was quite remote from the government.

Notably, more than 800 contractual instructors had been protesting since September 7, 2022, calling for their reinstatement after having their services terminated in the year 2021.

Earlier, Birbor Riangtem told the media, "Though Meghalaya Teacher Eligibility Test (MTET) was introduced in 2010, the examination was conducted only in 2019 and by that time we were over-aged and many of us were not qualified."
