The Kuki and Meitei communities in Manipur have been engaged in an ethnic battle for the past three months, yet there is still no sign of an end...

Digital Desk: Mirabai Chanu, the 2020 Tokyo Olympic silver medalist weightlifter shared a video on her Twitter account on Monday in which she appealed Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah to restore peace to the northeastern state of Manipur, which has been ripped apart by violence.

The Olympian claimed that due of the continued hostilities, players are negatively impacted because they are unable to train under the current circumstances.

As stated by Chanu in the video, the ongoing violence in Manipur would soon reach its third month mark. However, the state has not yet experienced peace.  Many players have been unable to train as a result of the violence, and students are also experiencing disruptions in their academic pursuits. There have been numerous fatalities and several burnt houses.

The weightlifter said, "I want to appeal to the Prime Minister and the Home Minister to bring an end to this conflict as soon as possible and save the people of Manipur and bring back the peace prevalent earlier in the state." The weightlifter is currently training in the US for an upcoming World championship and Asian Games.

The Kuki and Meitei communities in Manipur have been engaged in an ethnic battle for the past three months, yet there is still no sign of an end in sight.

Conflicts have been taking place in Manipur since May 3 of this year.

Since it began, the ethnic conflict in Manipur has resulted in the deaths of over 150 people.

Thousands of women from various organisations protested on Monday in Imphal, Manipur, calling for the restoration of normalcy and peace in the state. The women marched to the house of the chief minister, N Biren Singh, to meet with him and deliver a memorandum. A squad of Rapid Action Forces and other security forces halted them at the Singjamei Chinga Makhong traffic intersection as they started a peaceful rally from Singjamei Market.
