Guwahati: The State Assembly on Wednesday informed that the former Sonowal headed Government spent Rs 82.59 crore on newspaper advertisements in five years.

During question hours, IPR Minister Pijush Hazarika stated that those advertisements were published in 41 newspapers of different languages of the state, in response to a query asked by AIUDF MLA Karim Uddin Barbhuya.

To a dependent question, the minister replied that the IPR department has impaneled 13 newspapers in the Assamese language, accompanied by 9 in English, and 6 each in Bangla and Hindi.

“There is no policy to collect the GST from the newsprint required for publishing the papers. However, the government is considering this option,” the Minister informed the House. PTI
