Rajya Sabha MP Kanad Purkayastha has made a strong plea for the revitalization of the Silchar Doordarshan Kendra, emphasizing its historical significance as a public broadcasting hub for southern Assam. During a recent Parliamentary Standing Committee meeting on Communications and Information Technology in New Delhi, the MP pressed for the restoration of the Kendra's infrastructure, regional programming, and its distinct local identity, which he believes is vital for reflecting the unique culture and aspirations of the Barak Valley.
Purkayastha, who participated in the committee session on Wednesday, articulated his concerns regarding the centre's gradual deviation from its original mission. He noted that the Silchar Doordarshan Kendra, once a pivotal platform for the region, has over time lost its core character and purpose, diminishing its ability to serve the local populace effectively.
Beyond the committee discussions, the MP also held direct talks with Prasar Bharati Director General Rajeev Kumar Jain. Following these discussions, Purkayastha informed a local newspaper that he received assurances from the Director General, indicating that issues pertaining to the Silchar Doordarshan Kendra, alongside broader initiatives to enhance public broadcasting services across the Northeast, would be addressed with priority.
The call to revive the Silchar Doordarshan Kendra underscores the ongoing demand for robust, regionally-focused media outlets that can authentically represent the diverse voices and concerns of Assam's Barak Valley. Its restoration is seen as crucial for cultural preservation and informed public discourse in the area.
